Australian Visitor Comes to SMAN 1 Solok Selatan, Encourages Students to “Speak English” Confidently

Sumbarmaju.Com, Muara Labuh, Solok Selatan — The English learning atmosphere at SMAN 1 Solok Selatan was different on, as students had a valuable opportunity to communicate directly with an Australian citizen, Ms. Brita Deborah Mathew.

Her presence immediately created a more lively and enthusiastic classroom atmosphere. Rather than simply visiting the school, Ms. Brita encouraged students to be confident in speaking English and not be afraid of making mistakes.


The Principal of SMAN 1 Solok Selatan, Mairisna, S.Pd, said the activity provided a positive experience for students because they could practice their English directly with a foreign speaker.


“The purpose of this activity is not only to motivate students but also to encourage them to get used to speaking English in their daily lives,” Mairisna told the media, Sunday (30/08/2026),


During the visit, Ms. Brita Deborah Mathew also invited students to participate in a Speech Contest, an English public speaking.competition that will be held at Time Language Center. In addition, an educational seminar will also be held in Padang.


Ms. Brita also took the opportunity to motivate the students to be brave and confident when communicating in English. According to Ms. Brita, English proficiency is very important for the younger generation, especially in Solok Selatan, which has significant tourism potential and is increasingly becoming a destination for visitors.


“Be brave to communicate in English. Do not be afraid of making mistakes. Solok Selatan is a tourism destination with great potential to attract foreign tourists,” she told the students.


The direct interaction with a foreign English speaker became a valuable learning experience for the students. They not only studied English theory in the classroom but also had the opportunity to practice real conversations in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.


The activity is expected to increase the students’ confidence and improve their English communication skills. It is also expected to prepare the younger generation of Solok Selatan to communicate with international tourists and support the development of tourism in the region. (A.R)
